When my pregnancy test came back positive, it was both the happiest and scariest moment of my life. Or as Homer Simpson would say, “The scariest moment of your life… so far.”

While I couldn’t wait to be a mother, I dreaded the world I was bringing my child into. Let’s be honest, this world sucks. There’s a saying: “Accept what you can’t change. Change what you can’t accept,” but it’s not that easy. There are countless things to change, but many of us don’t have the power to do so (or so we think), and the people in a position of power don’t give a shit.

I know my son won’t be a child forever, but that doesn’t mean he should have to harden his heart to survive this cruel place we call home. Seeing the sparkle in his eyes, the joy in his smile… the mere thought of it vanishing cuts me like a knife. My kind, thoughtful young man growing up cynical and pessimistic, breaks my heart, and it makes me wonder how we got here.Sure, the world was never perfect, but you’d think we’d learn from the past and become better people, kinder people.

For a person all about love, I can’t wrap my head around how well we play the role of villain. We destroy nature, we destroy the animals and we destroy one another. For what? To feel a tiny bit better about ourselves? It truly baffles me how people could hate others so strongly, all while knowing nothing about them. For things out of our control no less, and even if it were, so fucking what? It’s not your life, who the fuck are you to judge?

This is not the legacy I want to leave behind. Our history fills me with dread, embarrassment, and shame. People should be equal, treated fairly and somewhere along the way we lost sight of that. Now, we rank others based on monetary value, the colour of their skin, and who they love. It leaves me speechless.

I’m not a religious person, though I went to a Catholic school, where “do onto others” was drilled into us, just as “he who is without sin, cast the first stone.” Silly me, thought these were easy “rules” to live by (hello, common fucking decency). Simply put, respect your fellow human beings! If the roles were reversed, I highly doubt you’d be happy with how things are.

But, alas, this is the world we bring our innocent, pure children into. A world full of hate and fear, one that crushes their spirit and turns their hearts to stone. We need to change this world, for ourselves and for our little ones. It is not so hard to give love to those around us, or show a stranger some kindness… is it?
